The Challenges of Cooking With Tofu

The world today is more health conscious than ever. People pursue health actively, through diet control, exercises and yoga, spiritualism and so on. One fast emerging trend in this line is embracing vegetarianism. It is easy to make a resolution to yourself not to eat meat from this date onwards. The success of this resolution would more often than not depend not as much as your own commitment as on the availability of alternatives that measure up to the taste and aroma of meat recipes.

Introducing Tofu into Your Daily Diet ¨C Some Cooking-With-Tofu Basic Tips

Tofu is said to be the ¡°material¡± that the newly turned veggies can use to cook their non-vegetarian recipes without compromising on taste, looks or nutritional content. Tofu is indeed capable of substituting a host of non-vegetarian foods and dairy products. However, the switch over should be worked in gradually if you want it to end into complete transition and success in your staying a veggie for as long as you will find it suitable.

Be ready for a battle of wills in the beginning and beware of the challenges that you may face cooking with tofu. A few of the most important points are listed below for your guidance and reassurance.

1. Soybean is said to contain 16 identified allergens ¨C hence, do not make the switch too suddenly. Particularly take care of the tolerance levels of the elderly and children.

2. Beware that the recipes that are meant for meat will not taste like they should when the meat is substituted with tofu. This may be one of the greatest challenges of cooking with tofu. People tend to think that by calling it a ¡®substitute for meat¡¯, it will make a vegetarian dish taste the same. Not so; be prepared for changes in taste and consistency.

In fact, it takes quite some skill and experience at cooking with tofu to know exactly how to get the tofu to simulate the texture of the meat you want to substitute. It is very possible to make tofu feel like fish meat, chicken and even beef. However, like regular cooking, it will take some time to master the tricks involved.

3. When cooking with tofu, remember to follow only tofu cooking recipes. Substituting meat in meat-based recipes will result in highly disappointing meals. The difference lies in the fact that meat will lend its flavor to the dish, while tofu can only take it (since it can absorb not give flavors). Hence, cooking with tofu usually involves draining of water (to make it absorbent) and then marinated for at least a few hours before cooking it to absorb the new flavors.
