Making Tofu the Easy Way

Tofu is coagulated soymilk that originates from China but is widely used in most Asian countries and now all over the world. It is a great source of vitamins and minerals besides the fact that it tastes good too. Tofu is often used as the meat equivalent for vegetarians, as it can be cooked in a very large variety of dishes including desserts.

Why Buy When You Can Make It Fresh at Home

Making tofu is extremely easy as the same procedures are used of making cheese but you will be making it from soymilk instead. Most of the work in making tofu lays in making the soymilk. However, because of the popularity of tofu, there are special soymilk makers available in the market, which will produce it in no time at all.

Once you have the soymilk ready and depending on how much tofu you want to make you need to use a coagulant agent such as calcium sulfate, which is gypsum or Nigari salts, which are magnesium and calcium chloride. Once you mixed the coagulant in the soymilk tofu will form in small little pieces; you need to collect and place them in a box that is lined with muslin cloth or directly in the muslin cloth in order to drain all the water. Allow the water to drain for at least couple of hours or until all water is drained.

Once the tofu is formed in a solid block you can place it back in the box or cut it in small cubes, as you would like to eat it but for storing purposes you need to add some cold water to it for preserving purposes.
