Crab legs that are sold in markets across the country, are already cooked. The reason for this is that when the crabs are caught, they are then cooked on board the ship. Immediately after cooking they are flash frozen. This helps seal in the flavor. Because of this process, cooking crab legs is very simple.

When purchasing crab legs, be sure to check and see if they have been thawed. Thawed out crab legs will sometimes loose their taste and freshness. When determining how many crab legs should be purchased, figure on about one pound per person. This should supply everyone with enough meat from the crab legs. Crab legs can be kept in the refrigerator up to two days after they have thawed. It is best to begin cooking crab legs right after they have thawed out.

Choices In Cooking Crab Legs

There are several successful methods to cooking crab legs. One that is extremely popular is the traditional steaming method. This will require a large pot and a steamer fixture that can be placed in the pot. An airtight lid is recommended in order to steam the crab legs quickly. Add about one tablespoon of salt for every two cups of water. When cooking crab legs with this method, it generally takes five to seven minutes to cook them.

Baking is another method to cooking crab legs. Heat the oven to about 350 degrees. Crack the crab legs and brush them with butter. Bake for about eight to nine minutes.

Boiling crab legs is a method that can be used if you have managed to find uncooked crab legs. In a large pot, place about one tablespoon of salt and bring the water to a boil. Drop the crab legs in and boil for about five to seven minutes. Drain the water and rinse the crab legs with cold water. They are then ready to serve.

Crab legs can even be cooked in a microwave. Wrap the crab legs in a moist paper towel. Cook for two to three minutes.

Cooking crab legs is very easy. They can be made quickly and with little fuss, allowing for more time to enjoy this tender delicious meal.
